thanks to:
Mel and Kate, for their help today, with de-installation,
Michelle for a long day of photography on Thursday (that's my sad iPhone image of the mat, not her's!)
grads for helping the undergrads
undergrads for hanging in there (and sometimes helping the grads:)

coming in next week to take photos?

Let me know! De-installation will begin on Thursday. (I'll be in on Wednesday afternoon if you need me to let you in to the museum before my meeting.)

I don't need "scanned"copies that cannot then be corrected

Just an FYI, scanned copies of the adobe fillable forms are not of any use to the museum (we/I cannot modify them if I find mistakes, need to add data, etc.) The point of having you email the fillable inventory record is to be able to store them on our server, to modify them (now, next year, in 2014)  as part of the NAGPRA process or for any other purpose. Please see the previous post, as well.

saving your documents

If you are having trouble saving your data (after reading all the various and sundry comments on the previous post, including Catherine's last comment--that she downloaded the free trial of Adobe Professional), then you may ask me for an extension (on the e-versions only). Shoot me an email before you split a gut and  I'll let you know what you should plan to bring for tomorrow (basically, the printed hardcopy--make a photocopy for yourself!--along with the appended materials). Those of you who want this entire semester behind you before next Wednesday, more power to you. Last class tomorrow. We will meet in 4005 for a while, then head down to the museum for snacks and celebration that we all survived the exhibit, the furloughs and the inventory research! Any food allergies?

questions/answers related to your research and inventory worksheets

Some of you have approached me with questions about your research and the format for turning in the hard copies (e-copy submission instructions are here.)  Electronic copies are due at 1 pm on Wednesday, May 12.

Hard copy submission is at 1:30 when class begins. Please submit each worksheet individually--that is with the three images of comparative objects (photocopied from your reference catalogs) stapled to the worksheet . I will need to know from which book (referenced on the worksheet) the photocopied images come, so be sure to either  photocopy the title page and submit this along with the image, OR simply write the reference on the photocopy of the image (I'll be able to correlate this easily with the appropriate reference on the corresponding worksheet).

Also, some of you have discovered that the work direction is mis-stated on the basket cards. Please use the terms leftward and rightward (per Shanks), and then in the NOTES, discuss the fact that the card reads "right to left" or "left to right," but that you suspect it is incorrect (if that is the case). Also use the NOTES section as a location to discuss any other discrepancies (but not the concordance, per se--as that is simply a quick reference we put together for you). Check all the sources against one another and if the concordance is the ONLY place with a number discrepancy, then assume it is a typo.

Some of you have apparently not discovered that the warp and weft materials for many of the baskets are listed in the e-catalog. Some of you have basket catalogs with none of this listed, but have found in your research that certain plants are typically the materials used in particular basket forms/contexts. The NOTES are a place to offer this information. You may also place it in the appropriate field above the NOTES and then offer a parenthetical statement such as (see NOTES).

If you have other questions, please let me know!

news and review re: today's class

1. As discussed in class today, there will be no weekly seminar next Wednesday, May 5. Instead, I will be in the museum during that time to help you with access to artifacts or documents and to answer any questions you might have. I will also plan to be in the museum on Friday, May 7, from 10-Noon and after 1 pm.

2. The online reading quiz will be ready to go by 10 a.m. on Tuesday morning and you will have until Wednesday (May 5), 11 a.m. to take it. I anticipate that it will be comprised of about 20 m/c and t/f questions.

3. I have uploaded the Research and Inventory Worksheet to SacCT. You can find it in the Cotton Accession file.  Once you have completed this pdf.  form, you will save it as "Research Inventory Worksheet+YourName+1"  (... +2, +3)  for each worksheet you turn in. (The order of numbering doesn't matter; these will later be changed by me or some other museum worker to reflect the accession [or some other] number. For now, I want to be able to identify them quickly [for grading purposes] in an electronic folder.

4. I have decided to jettison the idea of having you submit scanned images taken from your research/scholarly references. Instead, I will have you turn in photocopies (only). These will be attached/stapled to your hardcopy Research and Inventory Worksheets (the latter of which will also be submitted electronically). Remember, there will need to be 3 of these (one from each scholarly source) for each of your objects.

5. I have uploaded scans of the Overland Monthly articles that Dr. Roberts so kindly allowed me to copy. They are in their own folder, nested within the Reserve Readings folder. Please note: these are not required reading; simply uploaded for your interest.

6. Please do not hesitate to ask/email me if you need help with anything related to the research assignment. I have many catalogs in my personal collection and am more than happy to also help you locate other sources.

7. Please don't forget to take a look at each other's "Repatriation" posts and to respond to any comments/queries you might receive.

Okay, all for now.

we will meet today in MND 1005

I want to meet in 1005 today, so that I can use the computer projection equipment. Please spread the word; I'll post a note on the door of MND 4005 and will also send out an email via SacCT.
